A brief visit to Mexico

1 Oct

My journey to Mexico lasted less than 48 hours, but I had enough time to visit some attractions of Toluca and the big city of Mexico DF. I arrived on Friday to share some thoughts with students of Toluca and during Saturday I went to Mexico City for a short visit.

During this short trip I was invited to give a conference regarding Tendencies of the Internet and webmasters on the campus of the Tec de Monterrey in Toluca. I also participated in a forum regarding operating systems. The organizers and participants of the event were very nice. During that night we went to “La Casona”, a nice dance club to hear some live music and get some drinks (Tequila is always recommended in Mexico). Toluca is an industrial city with low temperatures. In its downtown you’ll find a nice plaza, a very nice cathedral and the Cosmovitral. Near this city is located Metepec, another fast growing town from people moving out Mexico DF. You’ll find a nice church in a hill where you can get a view of the city.

During the last day, it was time to go to Mexico DF. Victor was the guide and driver during this adventure. When we finally got to the city, we started the tour in the Santa Fe neighborhood. This area is becoming an important business and financial center in the city and you’ll find very nice buildings and lots under construction. From there we went to Colonia Roma, Paseo de las Lomas (Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood) until we hit Paseo de la Reforma, the most important avenue in the city.

Finally we ended up in the downtown area, a place with a lot of traffic and people. In the Zocalo (the main plaza) all the buildings had decorations related to the celebration of Mexico’s Independence the past September 16th. The Basilica of Mexico was very pretty and in front of it you could see some dancers performing a very nice Azteca choreography. Near the Zocalo, you also find the Bellas Artes Palace, Casa de los Azulejos and the Latinamerican tower.

The last part of the tour included a visit to the Revolution monument, Paseo de la Reforma and the forest of Chapultepec with a castle with the same name. In the surroundings you could see the Torre Mayor, the biggest building in the City.

To end my visit to the city, we went to the Zona Rosa neighberhood looking for some food. We had some meat and tortillas. Very good and hot food, like is traditional in Mexico.

I’ll be back in this city in December with more time to check out the museums, theaters and night life. Any tips will be appreciated.

Remember to visit my pictures of Mexico.
